Ask this writer in January 2022 if Kylian Mbappe was going to feature for Real Madrid when the 2022/2023 season kicks off, he would have replied in the affirmative. Kylian Mbappe was the final brick in the wall, the one who would spearhead Real Madrid’s European Domination for the next decade, the script wad written and the stars were aligned.
Unfortunately, it was not to be, Kylian extended his contract with PSG until 2025 leaving most Madridstas in literal pain. Immediately the saga was over, reports in the media stated that the Kylian Mbappe topic was over and that Mbappe would never feature for Real Madrid.
When asked in an Interview after the renewal announcement, Kylian Mbappe said his Real Madrid dream was not over.
Fiorentino Perez in his recent interview with El chiringuito as made comments that felt like the door was still open to Mbappe.
While a huge chunk of the Madrid fan base do not want to see Mbappe feature for Real again, the question is Come 2025, would Real Madrid need kylian Mbappe.
Its a nuanced question and the answer depends on several factors. Kylian Mbappe is a phenomenal player, a generational talent, there is no team in the world right now that Mbappe would not stroll into the starting line up, he is a really good player, having him in your team instantly makes the team better, what he brings to the team is fantastic, the boy is brilliant.
But Real Madrid NEEDING Kylian Mbappe in 2025 would be regression at the highest level, it would mean there has been no development, No great signing across over six transfer windows, it would mean failure across board. If Real Madrid are to head into 2025 not wanting, hoping or needing to get Mbappe into the team, then here’s what must happen.
Constant Development of Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo
Vinicius was the butt of jokes 2020/2021 season, a classic meme. We all felt (this writer included) that if Vini was the man to fill up the void Cristiano left, then we were in trouble. He was talented yes, the potential was there, but at that point it just felt like he was not good enough for Real Madrid, he would create magic outside the box, but when he got in the box, the end result was poor, his open goal miss against Sevilla in the closing stages of La Liga possibly cost of the trophy that season, Vinicius’s poor output was probably the biggest emphasis on why we desperately needed Kylian.
Mbappe and a benzema in his prime would be a scary frontline for any defense to handle. 23 goals and 20 assists later, including a champions League final winning goal, Vinicius is one of madridstas dearly beloved.
Vinicius has turned into a lethal weapon capable of destroying any defense in the world, he tormented Oscar mingueza in the classico and left him for dead, his incredible strike against Sevilla is one of the highlights of the season, he brilliantly got away from fernandinho and maintained his composure to score what would be a vital goal in Real Madrid charge to the champions League title, slipped off Trent Alexander Arnold’s radar to score the winning goal in the Champions league final.
Vinicius went from being a joke to being regarded as a potential Ballon D’or winner. His partnership with Benzema is one for an entirely different article.
Vinicius has the potential, he has the talent, he can become better. He has extended his contract with Real until 2027 is highly rated by Florentino Perez, who consider vini as untouchable.
In the interview with El Chiringuito, Florentino Perez said “Rodrygo will surprise us”, this is not a statement too hard to believe, Rodrygo has shown flashes of brilliance and greatness, I’m of the opinion that Rodrygo took real to the final, he began the comeback against Chelsea and even more incredibly against Manchester city, Rodrygo has it in him, he’s there will be that open goal he missed in the super copa against Barcelona, and he may prefer playing on the left wing rather than the right wing he is normally used, he can become a super star, he has what it takes. If Rodrygo and Vinicius continue to develop as they should, then we have in our hands two very dangerous wingers.
Karim Benzema is currently the best player in the world but at 34, Benzema is enjoying the final moments of his wonderful career. Realistically, Real Madrid should be able to get at least three more seasons of the incredible player we witnessed this just concluded season, which would mean by 2025, we would need that potent number 9 to replace him, or he may go on to be one of those evergreen strikers and be able to deliver for the next 5 or 6 years, after all CR7 is still delivering at 37 and Zlatan at 40 is still delivering too. As long as he is able to maintain shape, bangs in goals and shows no sign of slowing down, we would not have to worry about bringing any other big name strikers in three years.
But if reverse is the case, then securing Benzema’s replacement would be very necessary, most especially if Luka Jovic fails to step up and deliver.
Mbappe not signing for Madrid this season is a big disappointment for many reasons, but Real Madrid have the quality, finance and history to continue dominating Europe and the world.
Real Madrid is the greatest club in football history, there is no player in the world who does not want to come to Madrid, and any player who turns Madrid down at any point should never be paid attention to again.
If by 2025, Mbappe decides to move on from PSG and Real Madrid for some reasons happen to be interested, then it must be a case of him desperately needing to come to Madrid. If its the opposite, then a quite a lot has gone wrong.
